The first step is to pilot the development of a small number of clinical standards in a high priority disease areas. The standards should be disease-focused rather than setting/facility-focused and span the whole continuum of care, from prevention targeting individual at high risk of developing the disease, to treatment, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, and rehabilitation and long-term care following discharge from hospital. The standards should also include different technologies (drugs and devices) and diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
The Academy’s role is to help build a multi-stakeholder model for standard development that includes a review of international standards in the same disease areas, a systematic review of the evidence base including economic considerations and local data.
